Travis, I just visited your pastor's blog and am dissappointed to see that he has disabled comments. I just wanted to say that not all United Methodist Chruches are bad. I went to one for a while when I lived in Indiana and it was a church I will never forget. I was SO blessed by what I learned there! Perhaps you will pass this on to him. www.unionchapel.com in case he's interested.
Hi Beulah, its me Andrea :-)
I thought I'd reply to your comment since Travis is still out of town. I'm sure he will reply as well whenever he gets back.
I think our Pastor keeps his comments OFF just so its not flooded with foul language and junk he doesnt want other church members reading.
He may have other reasons behind it but I'm not sure what they are.
I dont think all Methodist Churches are bad. I havent read his post.. I'll have to read it.
I dont agree with some of their beliefs... such as "sprinkling" but there are great methodist churches out there.
I'm sure Travis will pass that on.
Hm. Well, I don't know what that is but my church didn't sprinkle.
Hey Beulah,
Yea a lot of Methodist churches sprinkle. Most around the South did any way.
Travis has been pretty busy since he got back from NY. He will probably reply back to you sometime early next week.
Hi Beulah,
Yea, I know not all Methodist churches are bad... of course there are some doctrinal things I disagree with, but not all are bad. I think he was referring to the individual denominations in general. Because of all of them have left the orthodox roots from which they came from... which is why the denominations as a whole are dying.
I"m not entirely sure I understand what your reply means, Travis. What part of my old church's doctine do you disagree with?
Do you mean all Methodists as a whole? Because I think it has more to do with location than denomination.
Or do you mean all denominations (baptist, pentecostal, methodist..so forth) are dying?
Hi Beulah...
Well, as far as doctrinal disagreements is concerned as long as a Methodist holds to the basics of Orthodox Christianity (Doctrines like the Deity of Christ, Salvation by Grace through Faith, the Virgin Birth, the Bodily Resurrection of Christ, the complete inspiration of God's Word, the Bible, the physical and literal return of Christ one day, etc...) then I would consider them brothers (or sisters) with me in the Faith.
Baptists and Methodists (speaking generally here, b/c there are exceptions on both sides)... but baptists and methodists disagree on the finer points of theology like for example the nature of salvation and the proper mode of baptism. Most Methodists would say salvation is totally in the hands of man (Armenism) where as most Baptists would say salvation is the hands of God (Calvinism). And Methodists baptize by sprinkling, where as Baptists believe the more Biblical method is by complete bodily immersion.
But on some things like those 2, we can agree to disagree, and still work together. But when they depart the basics (or essentials) of the Faith like those above, then we're no longer walking together... they're worshiping someone different than I am.
And like I said before, I know that there are still some faithful Methodists out there who haven't departed from the Faith... who still believe the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God and that it alone is the sole authority regarding spiritual matters. But most of the mainline protestant denominations have left that view, and therefore are beginning to believe and teach things that are false. (Like the Episcopal Church consecrating an openly gay Bishop... thats an abomination before God! There's no way God is in that). If you study the history of the Church and the entire movement of Christianity across the centuries, when any group or church departs from the historic, Orthodox beliefs of the Faith, its just a matter of time before its shriveled up and dead.
God simply does not bless or use churches or groups that dishonor Him by contradicting His Word.
P.S. Southern Baptists (the SBC) is not dying... it was heading that way in the 50's & 60's... but some men of God saw it coming, and took action to change things. There's been a huge change in our denomination in the last 20 years.
Professors in our seminaries are no longer contradicting the Bible and teaching false ideas... and it's back working hand-in-hand with the local churches. Today, we have more missionaries all over the world than any other protestant denomiation... a fact that I'm very proud of.. b/c we're doing what Christ told us to do. (Matt.28:18-20)
